Using Wheelchairs and Hoists Safely

Course Information

A Course for Care staff and volunteers who support wheelchair users who also require the use of hoists. This is a practical focused course so in order to attend, participants must have undertaken a general moving and handling course within the previous two years.

Course Content
Manual Handling:

  • risk reduction and problem solving
  • promoting individual mobility for people with a physical disability
  • principles of ergonomics and efficient movement
  • wheelchair components and keeping it working safely
  • adjusting a wheelchair for individual needs
  • practical implications of hoist and standaid transfer of clients
  • slings
  • hoist and sling safety checks

Practical Handling Skills:

  • assisting in and out of wheelchair
  • negotiating kerbs and ramps
  • transfers
  • propelling
  • lifting and loading the chair
  • passive and standing hoist client transfer
  • sling attachment
  • identifying dangers

Certification          TfC Certificate of Attendance
