Course Information
A Course for Care staff and volunteers who support wheelchair users who also require the use of hoists. This is a practical focused course so in order to attend, participants must have undertaken a general moving and handling course within the previous two years.
Course Content
Manual Handling:
- risk reduction and problem solving
- promoting individual mobility for people with a physical disability
- principles of ergonomics and efficient movement
- wheelchair components and keeping it working safely
- adjusting a wheelchair for individual needs
- practical implications of hoist and standaid transfer of clients
- slings
- hoist and sling safety checks
Practical Handling Skills:
- assisting in and out of wheelchair
- negotiating kerbs and ramps
- transfers
- propelling
- lifting and loading the chair
- passive and standing hoist client transfer
- sling attachment
- identifying dangers
