 Frequently asked questions

  • What is Training for Care?  It's a voluntary organisation and registered charity which specialises in vocational and skills training for staff and students working with people with additional needs, older people and pre-school children. It is a small, friendly organisation which is less formal than an FE college. There are two large training rooms, a computer room and a student common room
  • How many people will be in my group?  16 (all 16-18 years old) and one main course tutor who will work closely with you, support and assess you throughout the course and visit you on placement.
  • What hours will I attend?  Working hours are Monday – Friday and will be not more than 35 hours/week. You will attend tutorials at TfC once a week from 9.30am – 4.30pm. The other four days you will be on placement. You may be asked to work early or back shifts at certain placements but this will be agreed with you beforehand.
  • How much do I get paid?  You will receive a training allowance of £55 per week plus weekly travel costs (usually a bus pass) less £3. Two days paid holiday for every month of training plus public holidays. Some holidays must be taken at fixed times.
  • Can you give more details about the work I will be doing?  You will have the opportunity to do two placements of 8-10 weeks working with a choice of three different client groups: children, older people and people with additional needs. On placement you will learn what duties are involved in carrying out a care or nursery assistant’s job and will be given the chance to do hands on work under supervision. In care settings this might involve assisting clients to wash, dress, access toilet facilities, eat and drink – all in a way which respects their individuality, independence and privacy. In nursery placements you will be involved in setting up and clearing away play equipment, carrying out play activities with the children, preparing snacks, reading stories, etc. Much of what you do will be encouraging the children to be independent and to express themselves as individuals – this will involve a lot of observation of the children as well as actually playing with them. In all placements good communication skills are essential.
  • Will my placement be near where I live?  We will do our best to keep travel to your placement to a minimum, but we will also be looking for the right placement for you and this may require a longer journey.
  • What does the course lead to?  Successful completion of the course leads to entry to either the Health and Social Care SVQ level 2 or Children’s Care, Learning and Development SVQ level 2 depending on the choice of the student. Most students become employed while doing their SVQ.  At the end of level 2 students can progress to SVQ level 3 under the Modern Apprenticeship programme.
  • Where are you?  We are situated at 12-14 Logie Green Road in Edinburgh.  Bus numbers 8, 17, 23, 27, 13 and 36 all stop within a few minutes walking distance.
